A share price tells you what the market is paying for a company. It does not, by itself, tell you whether the underlying business is strong, financially sound, efficiently managed or capable of creating value over time. Understanding those things requires looking beneath the price.
The Analyst’s Journey takes you deeper into the process of understanding a business. It begins with the information companies provide — annual reports, financial statements and other disclosures — and develops the skills needed to interpret that information rather than simply read it.
You will explore profitability, cash flows, financial ratios, earnings, capital structure, leverage, capital allocation, shareholding patterns and other factors that help reveal the financial and economic characteristics of a business. You will also examine concepts such as economic moats and capital efficiency, which can help in assessing the quality and sustainability of a company's business model.
From there, the journey moves towards valuation: understanding what a company may be worth, how the market values it, and why a good business is not necessarily a good investment at any price.
The objective is not to produce a collection of numbers or ratios. It is to learn how to connect the numbers to the business behind them, ask the right questions, identify strengths and weaknesses, recognise potential risks and develop a reasoned view of a company's prospects.
Analysis is ultimately about turning information into judgement.
The journey from reading financial statements to understanding businesses begins here.
